Quality Control: Fast Image
Processing during Production
- Today's industrial quality
control demands rapid and precise decisions from image
processing systems under tough conditions in the
manufacturing plant. The scanning equipment must fit in
limited space, analyse objects in motion, and be
resistant to dust, vibrations and temperature changes.
Description
- Nahti is designed to
inspect seam welds of pipes or tubes moving through the
production line. Nahti combines Laser projection
technology with an intelligent camera to analyse the
welded seam on the pipe. The intelligent camera
determines whether the seam conforms to the manufactures
tolerances, or if corrective action must be taken. The
intelligent camera, which includes a full-fleged Power-PC
complete with TCP/IP network interface, scans the pipe
directly on the production line. The welded pipe moves
past the camera at a velocity of 2 meters per second. The
intelligent camera sends the results of its inspection to
the host PC via TCP/IP. The host PC serves as an
interface between intelligent camera and welding machine
operator. The operator can see graphically the results of
each inspection. Signal lamps, in the form of LED's are
also displayed on the PC monitor indicating when warning
and intervention limits for the weld are exceeded. This
simplified warning system decreases the reaction time for
the machine operator to make the needed corrections. In
addition to the LED's, Nahti keeps track of
warnings in a file, and also sends an electric signal to
an output port of the PC, allowing you to connect other
devices for recording the process. Although the image
that is acquired by the intelligent camera can be
displayed on the PC monitor via the network, a monitor
can also be connected to the intelligent camera itself to
check the image and to focus the laser and the camera
lens.
Economics
- This image based anaylsis
system can be adapted for a range of different
applications. The main feature of the system is, the
intelligent camera does the evaluation, thereby speeding
up the entire evaluation process. Once the software for a
specific application works satisfactorily, the cost of
replicating the system is lower than that for a
"classic" image processing system.
Outlook
- Intelligent Cameras and
Sensors are part of the production lines of the future.
When multiple cameras are used, the results can be
concentrated and dispatched anywhere via the network. In
this way the camera results can be viewed locally or at a
central point, and can even become part of the production
planning and records system.
